Welcome to the Under Armour Test of Will 2017 training guide.

This guide is designed to help prepare you physically and mentally for the Under Armour Test of Will 2017. Being well prepared is crucial to your success and that includes knowing your capacity and having a strategy for the day that plays in your favour.

The challenges for Test of Will 2017 National Heats are as follows:

60 secs

Burpees

Strategy Advice

This is the first challenge and will be the one that sets the pace for the following exercises. Make sure you are continuously moving for the full 60 seconds and find an even pace that pushes you to perform multiple repetitions, but also leaves some energy for the following challenges.

Dumbbell Thruster

Strategy Advice

Choose your dominant hand to perform this exercise as there will be no putting down of the dumbbell for the full 60 seconds. You can switch hands during the exercise but you should start with your strongest side. For those with a stronger core and lower body, you will find that pushing with your legs to get the dumbbell overhead is the most efficient way to perform this movement.

TRX ROW

Strategy Advice

Unlike the conventional inclined row, the TRX row requires more shoulder and core stability. Ensure that you brace your midsection as this will ensure a strong core to enable you to perform as many reps as possible. Focus on using the larger and stronger rhomboid (middle back) muscles rather than your arms (biceps) to pull. Go through the full range of motion and straighten your arms completely to avoid “no counts”.

SANDBAG THROW

Strategy Advice

The final exercise will be the ultimate Test of Will! You will be exhausted by this point but keep a good deadlift form when picking up the sandbag to protect your lower back. Taller athletes will be able to throw the sandbag over the bar in one movement. Shorter athletes can consider cleaning the sandbag onto your shoulders before pushing it over the bar. This final minute will seem like the longest 60 seconds of your life!
